The quarterfinals and semifinals of the World Cup knockout stage in Qatar will take place on Friday and Saturday. The groups that advanced to the last eight are listed below.


ARGENTINA


Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Australia, holding off a furious comeback. On Friday, they will take on the Netherlands there.


In his 1,000th match, captain Lionel Messi surpassed Diego Maradona's record of eight World Cup goals by scoring his first goal in a knockout round. Messi has stated he plans to retire from the national team after the tournament.


The most recent time La Seleccion reached the final—in 2014—they lost to Germany. La Seleccion won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986 and advanced to the final on three other occasions.

BRAZIL


Brazil easily defeated South Korea 4-1, scoring all four goals within the opening 36 minutes to advance through to the quarterfinals. On Friday at 15:00 GMT, they will play Croatia in the opening encounter of the quarterfinals.


The Selecao has won the World Cup five times and is the pre-tournament favorite to add a sixth championship to their historic haul.


Brazil has participated in every World Cup since 1930, but since they last won the tournament in 2002, they haven't advanced to the final.

CROATIA


After a thrilling 120-minute match ended in a 1-1 draw, Croatia defeated Japan 3-1 in penalties thanks to goalkeeper Dominic Livakovic's three saves.


Next up for the Croats is Brazil on Friday.


Croatia is competing in its sixth World Cup after losing to France in 2018 final.

ENGLAND


After easily defeating Wales and Iran in the group round, England advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over African champions Senegal.


On Saturday, the Three Lions will play host to the defending champions, France.


England has only ever finished fourth at the World Cup and only ever won it once in 1966.

FRANCE


France defeated Poland 3-1 to go to the quarterfinals and was once again one of the betting favorites to win the championship.


Les Blues will play England on Saturday, with Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe leading the way. Giroud, with 52 goals, has eclipsed Thierry Henry as France's all-time leading scorer.


In 1998 and 2018, France won the World Cup twice.

MOROCCO


Morocco defeated Spain 3-0 in a penalty shootout to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time and will take on Portugal on Saturday.


Following a 120-minute 0-0 tie, Moroccan striker Achraf Hakimi, who was born in Spain, scored the game-winning penalty kick.


After making it to the round of 16, once in 1986, they are now competing in their sixth final.


With just one point, Morocco, the only African team remaining in the running, was unable to advance to the round of 16.

NETHERLANDS


The Netherlands defeated the United States 3-1 on Saturday to move to the quarterfinals. On Friday, they will play Messi's Argentina.


The Dutch finished second at three World Cups, in 1974, 1978, and 2010. Since their elimination from Euro 2020, they have gone unbeaten in 19 games.


After being unable to qualify in 2018, they are back on the international stage this year.

PORTUGAL


Goncalo Ramos of Portugal scored three goals on his maiden World Cup debut as Portugal destroyed Switzerland 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2006.


Adroit play from Fernando Santos' team helped his team advance to a match against Morocco in the round of 16 on Saturday after the coach made the bold decision to sideline Cristiano Ronaldo.


Third place at the 1966 World Cup remains Portugal's best finish. They most recently triumphed in France at the Euro 2016.


The future of Ronaldo, who left Manchester United amicably last month, and his fury after being replaced against South Korea were topics of discussion leading up to the last-16 game.
